CLIVE, Iowa — With the holiday season in full swing, the Iowa Lottery is reminding Iowans to keep age-appropriate gifting in mind when exchanging presents that include lottery tickets.
In Iowa, players must be at least 21 in order to purchase lottery tickets, and the lottery has always considered its products something to be purchased by adults for adults. Early exposure to gambling can increase the risk later in life, and sometimes that exposure starts with a well-intended holiday gift.
The Iowa Lottery has joined the 2025 Gift Responsibly Campaign, an international effort led by the National Council on Problem Gambling to raise awareness about the risks of underage gambling. Dozens of lotteries and organizations across North America take part each year to reinforce the message that lottery tickets are never appropriate gifts for children.
The Iowa Lottery provides year-round resources to promote healthy play, including age-verification requirements, retailer training and online resources. Earlier this year, it also received a Level-2 recognition for Responsible Gaming through the World Lottery Association.
