CLIVE, Iowa — A northern Iowa man's morning coffee-and-scratch-ticket routine turned into a five-figure surprise when he scratched off a $30,000 prize.
"I'm retired, so I go up to the convenience store in Bancroft a couple of times a week and I sit back in the corner and have my coffee and a scratch ticket," David Haack said on Friday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's Mason City office.
Haack won the second top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "Peppermint Crossword" scratch game. He bought his ticket at Car-Go Express, 112 N. Long St. in Bancroft and thought he'd only won $100 until he went to the counter to redeem it and realized his prize was much larger.
"It kind of jolted me a little bit, but that was alright," said Haack, who plans to save his winnings. "I really don't know what my thought was. I just was surprised. I've played the scratch tickets and never really thought of winning anything big."
Peppermint Crossword is a $3 holiday-themed scratch game that features nine top prizes of $30,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.80. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit ialottery.com.
