CLIVE, Iowa — A routine stop for gas led to a $30,000 win for a New Hampton man, and he's already planning to share the good fortune.
David Knutson said he had an extra $30 in his shirt pocket when he stopped at All Stop, 138 E. Main St. in Fredericksburg to fill his pickup truck. On a whim, he bought a ticket in the "Premiere" scratch game, tossed it on the dash, and continued driving home.
On the way, he decided to pull over and scan the ticket with the Iowa Lottery mobile app. When he realized he'd won big, he drove to his wife's workplace to show her the ticket.
"I said, 'My camera's not working on my phone. Can you scan it on yours?'" Knutson recalled with a laugh. "She said, 'Is this for real?!' She thought I might've pulled one of those fake tickets that you can buy."
Knutson, who owns a trucking company, said his big win is exciting, but the chance to share it with people around him makes it even more meaningful.
"Ten percent will go to charity, the church, and we've got a friend whose husband got injured, so we'll help her out a little," he said. "Then all of our drivers will get bonuses this year. It's been a tough couple of years in the trucking industry. It might cheer the guys up just a little."
Premiere is a $30 scratch game that features 17 top prizes of $300,000, 84 prizes of $30,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.39. For more information about this game and the number prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
