CLIVE, Iowa — What started as a family birthday celebration quickly turned into an unforgettable moment for a Mason City woman who uncovered a $100,000 lottery prize.

Alyea Carter Greenan, 21, won a top prize playing the Iowa Lottery's "$100,000 Mega Crossword" scratch game. Her winning ticket was part of a group purchase made while her family was gathered to celebrate her grandmother's birthday.

"We all chipped in and she went to the store and got them for us," Greenan said of her aunt, who bought the winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 551 S. Illinois St. in Mason City.

In the $100,000 Mega Crossword game, players try to complete words with a given set of letters. The more words completed, the larger the prize.

Greenan said she was in disbelief when she reached the game's top prize level on her ticket. Not believing her luck, she pulled out her mobile phone and checked it with the Iowa Lottery mobile app, which confirmed her win. That set off a raucous celebration.

"We all just kind of got loud and yelled and hugged each other," she said.

After claiming her prize Tuesday at the lottery's office in Mason City, Greenan said she has a couple of ideas for her winnings.

"At the moment, I kind of just want to pay off my student loans, and use it to celebrate with my family, whether it's a vacation or just being together," she said.

The $100,000 Mega Crossword game is a $10 scratch game that features 46 top prizes of $100,000, 92 prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.29. For more information about this game and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
