Iowa
Has Its Second $1 Million-Winning Ticket This Month, Fourth This Year
DES MOINES, Iowa – A ticket winning a $1 million prize in
Saturday's Powerball drawing was sold at a Des Moines
convenience store. It's the second Powerball ticket in Iowa to
win a $1 million prize this month and the fourth so far this
year.
The $1 million-winning ticket was sold at Casey's, 4560 E. 14th
St. in Des Moines. And for the second week in a row, Iowa had
the nation's only Powerball ticket that won a $1 million prize
in the Saturday drawing.
The ticket originally matched the first five numbers but missed
the Powerball to win a $200,000 prize. But the player who
purchased the ticket also added the Power Play® option to the
winning play, which multiplied the prize to $1 million. No one
won Saturday's Powerball jackpot, so the prize increases to $30
million for Wednesday's drawing.
Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said it's exciting to see Iowa
continue to collect instant millionaires.
"Iowa's run of Powerball luck is really creating a buzz," Rich
said. "It seems like more and more people are adding the Power
Play option – and it pays off when they win $1 million rather
than $200,000 for the extra $1."
When the Powerball game was redesigned in January, one of the
changes made was specifically for the prize you win if your
ticket matches the first five numbers and you've added the Power
Play. The prize for that play is always $1 million, no matter
what the Power Play number is for that drawing.
Last week, a retired Des Moines man won a $1 million Powerball
prize by adding the Power Play option to his ticket. Richard J.
Smith, 84, of Des Moines bought his winning ticket at a West Des
Moines supermarket.
In August, two couples who were camping at the Iowa State Fair
won a $1 million prize by adding the Power Play option to their
Powerball ticket. Rick Hamilton and Sharon Sulser, both from
Chariton, and Vickie and Terry Chambers, both from nearby
Columbia, split the $1 million prize they won with a ticket they
purchased while making an ice run to a Pleasant Hill gas
station.
And in February, a Marshalltown man won a $1 million prize by
adding the Power Play option to his Powerball ticket. Ricky
Rushton, who worked in the cafeteria at the Swift & Co.
pork-processing plant in Marshalltown, bought his $1
million-winning ticket at a Marshalltown convenience store.
The winning numbers in Saturday's $25 million Powerball drawing
were: 13-32-45-49-50 and Powerball 30.
Prizes of $1 million must be claimed at Iowa Lottery
headquarters in Des Moines. Lottery offices are closed on the
weekend, so Monday is the earliest that the prize can be
claimed. Players can claim prizes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday-Friday. If the winner or winners need information before
coming forward to claim the prize, they are invited to call the
lottery at 515-725-7900.
"News of our latest $1 million winner comes just as Iowa players
have the chance to save on Powerball with Power Play purchases,"
Rich said. "The lottery's Smilin' October Special means players
who buy five Powerball with Power Play plays on one ticket or
five Hot Lotto Sizzler plays on one ticket save $1 and can
receive their plays for just $9.”
The Hot Lotto Sizzler option also paid off for an Iowa player in
Saturday's drawing. The player originally matched the first five
numbers drawn but missed the Hot Ball to win a $10,000 prize.
But he or she also added the Sizzler option to the winning play,
which multiplied the prize to $30,000. That winning ticket was
sold at Dahl's, 15500 Hickman Rd. in Clive.
The winning numbers in Saturday's Hot Lotto drawing were:
18-19-30-32-39 and Hot Ball 16. No one won Saturday's Hot Lotto
jackpot, so it increases to an estimated $4.27 million for
Wednesday's drawing.
Winning numbers may be checked on the lottery Web site at
www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at
(515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery
retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Since the Iowa Lottery's start in 1985, its players have won
more than $2.4 billion in prizes while the lottery has raised
nearly $1.2 billion for state programs. |
