CLIVE, Iowa — An Independence man got a late-night surprise when he discovered he'd won a $10,000 Iowa Lottery prize.
“I scratched it off at about 3 in the morning,” Alan Taylor said of his “$100,000 Mega Crossword” scratch ticket, which he bought at Kwik Star, 875 Fisher Drive in Waterloo.
Taylor is a night owl who runs on a few hours of sleep each day, so 3 a.m. was the perfect time to work on his ticket. Once he scratched it, Taylor said he was expecting a smaller prize amount.
“When I looked, I didn't realize that three red (words) and three black (words) was a $10,000 win,” Taylor said. “I had to redo it to make sure that's what it was saying.”
He scanned the ticket with his Iowa Lottery mobile app, which verified his big win. Taylor claimed his prize Thursday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Taylor, who is 73 and semi-retired, said he plans to use his winnings to pay for a cruise to somewhere warm.
The $100,000 Mega Crossword game is a $10 scratch game that features 46 top prizes of $100,000, 92 prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.29. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
