CLIVE, Iowa After rain derailed his plans to help a friend plant corn, a northeast Iowa man joined his wife on a day trip and won a $30,000 lottery prize.

Jeff Gann of Dunkerton claimed the first top prize in the Iowa Lottery's Lucky Stars scratch game. He bought a few tickets at Kwik Star, 813 S. Canfield St. in Dunkerton, during a stop he and his wife, Mary, made while driving to watch their grandson's ballgame in Cedar Rapids.

I got in the car and handed the tickets to my wife and said, 'Let's win something for a change!' Jeff Gann recalled with a laugh.

His wife scratched the tickets as he drove, and minutes later, she urged him to pull over.

I thought she was looking at the ticket wrong, he said. I had to look over and see if she had her glasses on.

Once his wife scanned the ticket with the Iowa Lottery mobile app, Gann said the realization began to set in for both of them.

Gann claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office. He said he plans to put part of his winnings toward a new pair of boots for his wife and perhaps a future vacation.

Lucky Stars is a $3 scratch game that features seven top prizes of $30,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.80.
