WHO: State lawmakers, the Iowa Department of Public Safety, and the Iowa Lottery will discuss new state support to help the families of Iowa peace officers and fire fighters who die in the line of duty.

WHAT: A new law taking effect July 1 will create a state program called the Iowa Public Safety Survivor Benefits Fund.

WHEN: 10 a.m. Tuesday (July 2, 2019).

WHERE: Iowa Peace Officer Memorial on the grounds of the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. (The memorial is just east of the Iowa Department of Public Safety Building at 215 E. Seventh St. Parking is available in the DPS lot and the memorial is just up the hill from the parking lot.) Tuesday's event will be held in a conference room at the DPS Building in the case of inclement weather.

WHY: A new state program will provide grants to organizations that assist with ongoing insurance costs for the surviving family members of Iowa peace officers and fire fighters killed in the line of duty.
