Davenport Woman Wins $30,000 Lottery Prize

Julie Meyer Wins Top Prize in '$30,000 Holiday Crossword' Game

Julie Meyer

CLIVE, Iowa — A Davenport woman who won a $30,000 lottery prize said she initially thought her prize was much smaller.

Julie Meyer said she was excited when she thought she'd won $3,000 on a "$30,000 Holiday Crossword" scratch ticket. But when a store employee checked her ticket on the lottery terminal, she realized her happy error.

"I actually had her scan it because I kind of wanted someone to double-check it besides me because I felt like I was counting wrong," said Meyer, who claimed her prize on Friday, a few days before her 31st birthday. "She kind of looked at me crazy and she goes, 'I can't cash this for you, hon.'

"I was thinking to myself, 'I know, right? It's $3,000, you can't cash that.' And then when she slid the ticket back I saw the extra zero and I was like, 'Hold on, wait! What did I miss?'"

Meyer, a restaurant manager and mother of four, said she called her mother to tell her the news.

"She's just in shock," she said. "She was like, 'I've never known anybody to win over $100 on a scratch-off.' I'm like, 'Me neither!'"

Meyer bought her winning ticket at W Mart, 1207 E. Locust St. in Davenport. She said she has a plan for her winnings.

"Honestly, right now I'm focused on a house and a car: a newer, nicer car and a house for the kids," she said.
