$10,000 Lottery Prize Comes Into Focus For Quad Cities Man

Andrew Gengler Claims Big Prize in '$250,000 Riches' Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa – A Quad Cities man has won a $10,000 lottery prize.

Andrew Gengler of Moline, Ill., won the 64th of 72 prizes of $10,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "$250,000 Riches" scratch game. He claimed his prize May 16 at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Gengler, 44, bought his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 3019 Rockingham Road in Davenport, while redeeming a smaller prize. He scratched it off in his car and knew it was a winner, but wasn't sure how much.

"I didn't have my glasses on," he said. "I couldn't tell if it was $1,000 or $10,000."

He returned to his work at a welding supply company, slipped on his glasses and the sizable prize came into focus.

"I just couldn't believe it said $10,000," Gengler said. "I've seen $10,000 on a ticket, but never under a number that I had. It was unreal."

He quickly called his wife, Tara, with the news.

"She asked me if I was lying," he said with a laugh. "I said, 'No, definitely not lying.' She said, 'Do you have your glasses on?' I said, 'I do now!'"

The Genglers plan to put their winnings toward a pair of upcoming weddings. Their son is getting married this year, while their oldest daughter is getting married next year.

The $250,000 Riches scratch game is a $20 ticket. More details about how to play this game, and the number of prizes still up for grabs in it, can be found on the Iowa Lottery's website, www.ialottery.com.
