CLIVE, Iowa – A Burlington woman was just one number away from winning a big Powerball jackpot in May and ended up with a $50,000 prize.
Cheryl Terry's easy-pick numbers matched four white balls and the Powerball in the May 26 drawing to win a $50,000 prize. She bought her winning ticket at Shell, 130 S. Roosevelt Ave. in Burlington.
She was shocked by the unexpected prize when she looked up the winning numbers online, checking and re-checking her ticket to be sure. She called her longtime boyfriend, Mike Willett, to share the news.
"He said, 'Well, check it again, are you sure you got the right date?'" Terry said with a chuckle. "I said, 'Yes!'"
Her surreal victory began to sink in on Tuesday when she stopped by the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids to claim her prize.
"When I got in here, it did," she said. "I had the big check in front of me and (my) picture taken and I said, 'Oh, I guess I did win!'"
Terry, who is 62 and works at the Burlington Walmart, plans to use her winnings on home improvements and to pay off bills.
The winning numbers in the $50 million jackpot drawing on May 26 were: 1-21-31-45-49 and Powerball 21. The Power Play® number was 2.
