CLIVE, Iowa — A central Iowa man used a portion of his winnings from an earlier prize to buy another lottery ticket – and hit big.

Ronald Conrad of Grimes won the 13th top prize of $100,000 in the Iowa Lottery's "Lucky Numbers Game Book" scratch game. He bought his winning ticket at Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh, 1701 SE 37th St. in Grimes, using his winnings from a $500 lottery win earlier in the day.

Conrad checked his ticket immediately after purchasing it and realized he'd won big. Then he asked a store employee to verify the prize amount on the lottery terminal.

"I handed it to the clerk and said, 'You don't have enough to pay me here, but check this out. Verify it for me!'"

Conrad said he rushed home to tell his wife the news.

"I showed her the receipt that the cashier had printed out for me," he said. "She first looked at it and thought it was $1,000. I said, 'No, you better look at all the zeros!' And then she almost fainted."

Conrad said he plans to put his winnings toward home improvements, new vehicle tires and bolstering his savings.

"It couldn't have come at a better time," he said. "It was a great, great day, and since my wife and I are both retired and living on Social Security, this is a game-changer."
