Lucas County Woman Wins $50,000 Lottery Prize

Peggy Lockner Wins Top Prize in '$50,000 Holiday Crossword'

CLIVE, Iowa — A Lucas County woman scratched off a lottery ticket with her husband and won a $50,000 prize.

Peggy Lockner, 65, of Chariton, won the fifth top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$50,000 Holiday Crossword" scratch game. She and her husband, Terry, bought the winning ticket at BP, 107 E. Grace Ave. in Chariton.

As they played the ticket together at home, Lockner said she realized they were completing a lot of words, and needed just one more to reach the game's top-prize level.

"I said, 'You know, if we get one more, it goes from $5,000 to $50,000!'" she recalled. "We got it, and it was so awesome. But we didn't believe it. We had to write every word down on a piece of paper and then count them, and we counted them and counted them."

They took the ticket back to the store to have a clerk verify their big win.

"She said, 'Oh, are you a big winner?'" Lockner recalled. "We said, 'Yeah, a really big winner! $50,000!' Everybody in the gas station, they were so excited for us. They all stopped and waited until she checked it, and then they all clapped. It was really cool."

Lockner claimed her prize on Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Clive. She said that she and her husband will save most of their winnings, but they have a few purchases planned for their four grandchildren.

"We're going to put it in the bank, and then take a moment and enjoy it," she said.

The $50,000 Holiday Crossword is a $5 scratch game. It features 13 top prizes of $50,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.53.
