Waterloo Man Claims $500,000 Powerball® Prize

Power Play Option On The Ticket Multiplies The Prize

Tu Kha Maung

CLIVE, Iowa — A Waterloo man who bought a Powerball ticket at a local grocery store has claimed a $500,000 prize.

Tu Kha Maung, 29, bought his winning ticket at the Guddi Mart at 306 Byron Ave. in Waterloo. He claimed his prize Friday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive.

Maung's ticket came within one number of having at least a share of Wednesday's $69.3 million Powerball jackpot. He matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball to initially win a $50,000 prize, but he also had added the Power Play® option to the purchase, which multiplied the prize to $500,000.

Wednesday's winning numbers were: 3-10-34-36-62 and Powerball 5. The Power Play number was 10. No one matched all six numbers to win the jackpot, so the big prize climbs to an estimated $79 million annuity ($63 million cash option) for Saturday.

Maung's ticket was one of three in the country to win a $500,000 prize in Wednesday's drawing. The other two were in New Jersey and Puerto Rico.

The Guddi Mart will receive a $500 bonus from the Iowa Lottery for selling the $500,000-winning ticket.

Players in $2 Powerball choose their first five numbers from a pool of 69, and another number – called the Powerball – from a separate pool of 26. The Power Play® option is available for an extra $1 per play.

Since getting its start in April 1992 in 15 states with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million, Powerball has grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today Powerball is played by 48 lotteries across the country with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
