CLIVE, Iowa — A Carlisle man has won a $20,000 Mega Millions prize.
Jim Hellrung of Carlisle matched four white balls and the Mega Ball® in the Jan. 5 drawing. His initial $10,000 prize was doubled to $20,000 because he opted for the $1 Megaplier® add-on, which multiples non-jackpot prize amounts by up to five times.
Hellrung purchased his winning ticket at Fareway, 1115 Bluestem Drive in Carlisle. He claimed his prize on Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Clive.
He was one number away from winning a $447 million jackpot in the Jan. 5 drawing. The winning numbers were 20-43-51-55-57 and Mega Ball 4. The Megaplier was 2.
The Mega Millions jackpot has continued to grow. The estimated jackpot for Friday's drawing is $750 million.
Players in $2 Mega Millions choose their first five numbers from a pool of 70, and another number - called the Mega Ball - from a separate pool of 25. The Megaplier option is available for an extra $1 per play.
