Urbandale Man Eyes New Boat After $50,000 Powerball® Win

Jeffrey Kosloske Claims Large Prize in April 10 drawing

Jeffrey Kosloske

CLIVE, Iowa — An Urbandale man who won a $50,000 Powerball prize said the excitement still hasn't subsided.

"I'm still shaking," Jeffrey Kosloske told officials on Thursday as he claimed his prize at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive. "I was fine until I started walking up to the building. I'm like, 'I'm really going in here! I'm really going to get the money! This isn't a dream!'"

Kosloske matched four of five white balls and the Powerball in the April 10 drawing. He was one number away from winning that night's $55.4 million jackpot.

He purchased his winning ticket at Price Chopper, 4343 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines, where he'd stopped to pick up an ingredient for dinner. As he was walking out, he spotted the store's Powerball jackpot sign and decided to buy a handful of plays.

He said he didn't check the tickets until the night after the drawing.

"I matched three numbers and I'm like, 'There's no way!' I see the fourth one and I'm like, 'Holy moly!' and then I looked and the Powerball matched.

"I almost had a heart attack," he added. "I started shaking so bad it wasn't even funny."

The winning numbers in the April 10 drawing were 14-16-23-50-53 and Powerball 3. The Power Play was 3.

Kosloske, an avid fisherman, said he plans to use his winnings to purchase a boat to take out with his family, including his girlfriend's father.

"I'm going to buy a nice boat so I can get him out on the water and have him fish his heart out," he said.

Players in $2 Powerball choose their first five numbers from a pool of 69, and another number – called the Powerball – from a separate pool of 26. The Power Play option is available for an extra $1 per play.

Since getting its start in April 1992 in 15 states with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million, Powerball has grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today Powerball is played by 48 lotteries across the country with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
