It Wasn't A Joke, Council Bluffs Woman Wins $30,000 Lottery Prize

Toshanna Avenetti Claims Top Prize In 'Stars A-Ligned' Scratch Game

Toshanna Avenetti  Hear Toshanna tell her story.

CLIVE, Iowa - Even as a Council Bluffs woman received her prize check from the Iowa Lottery this week, she still thought someone was playing a joke on her.

Toshanna Avenetti, 40, claimed the fifth of eight top prizes of $30,000 available in the lottery's "Stars-A-Ligned" scratch game.

"Someone is pulling a joke on me," Avenetti told lottery employees Monday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. "I'm waiting for the cameras to come out and tell me you've been punked or something."

It wasn't a joke; Avenetti really did win. She bought her winning ticket Sunday at Hy-Vee Drugstore, 757 W. Broadway. in Council Bluffs and scratched it off that night. She said she double-checked her work to make sure that she'd won.

She also returned to Hy-Vee the next morning to verify.

"The lady that was there scanned it and she says, 'Oh, well I don't know what this means,'" Avenetti said. "And my husband yelled really loud in the store."

Avenetti and her husband said they plan to share their winnings with their family.

"We have six kids so a lot of it is going to go to things they wanted or needed over the years that we haven't been able to get," she said.

Stars A-Ligned is a $3 scratch game. More details about how to play this game, and the number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery's website,
