Hardin County Woman Wins $10,000 Lottery Prize When She Needs It Most

Nickie Chaplin Claims Big Prize in '$100,000 Mega Crossword' Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa – A Hardin County woman says winning $10,000 came at the right time for her after recently losing everything in a house fire.

"I'm hoping to get a house for my kids," Nickie Chaplin of Hubbard explained. "That's what it's going to go away to be saved up for toward that 'cause of the house fire."

Chaplin bought her "$100,000 Mega Crossword" scratch ticket at her local Casey's at 27470 Hwy. 65 in Hubbard, and she ended up winning the 21st of 33 prizes of $10,000 available in the game.

At first Chaplin thought she'd only won $100 but got quite the surprise when the retailer scanned her ticket.

I took it in and she's like, 'I can't cash this in, Nickie.' And I'm like, 'Why not? I'm gonna buy more scratch tickets.' You know I just figured they didn't have the money in the drawer," she said. "And she's like, 'No. I can't cash this in, Nickie.' And so I looked at it and I thought it said $1,000, and then I was like -- double-looked and I was like, 'Whoa! $10,000! No way.' I'm like freaked out and of course I went home and I told my family."

Even after claiming her prize, things still didn't seem real for Chaplin.

"It's not really sinking in yet," she said.

Chaplin, 32, a stay-at-home mom, claimed her prize Monday at the lottery's headquarters in Clive.

The $100,000 Mega Crossword is a $10 scratch game. More details about how to play this game, and number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery's website,
