CLIVE, Iowa – A southwest Iowa man says news of his big lottery win over the weekend spread quickly.

Martin Arellano Sr. of Glenwood claimed the 12th of 17 top prizes of $100,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "$100,000 Mega Crossword" scratch game.

Arellano, 45, said he bought his winning ticket Friday at Lincoln Farm & Home BP, 515 Sharp St. in Glenwood. He said he was in a hurry to get home, so he just scratched the corner of his ticket off so that a store clerk could check it right away.

"She goes, 'You won $10,000!' I'm like, 'Nah, there's no way,'" Arellano told lottery employees Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. "She gave me the (receipt) and it had five zeroes instead of four. I told her, 'It's $100,000!' She goes, 'No way!' And then we were both at a loss of words."

Arellano said he tried to keep his lottery win quiet over the weekend, but that didn't happen.

"I've told a couple of people," he said. "But unfortunately between my wife and the gas station almost my whole town knows."

Arellano, who works at a different convenience store in Glenwood as well as at a warehouse in Council Bluffs, said he plans to use a portion of his winnings to buy a newer pickup and save the rest for a down payment on a house.

The $100,000 Mega Crossword is a $10 scratch game. More details about how to play this game, and number of prizes still up for grabs in it can be found on the Iowa Lottery's website,
