CLIVE, Iowa – An Ames woman credits her big Powerball win Saturday to a recent change to the way the numbers that she plays are chosen.

Edna Whetstone, 79, said she had been playing her own set of lucky Powerball numbers regularly, but made a change following the $758.7 million drawing two weeks ago.

"I just asked for (an) easy pick because I was disappointed picking all my numbers when the jackpot was so high and I didn't win anything to speak of," Whetstone told lottery employees Tuesday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's headquarters in Clive.

It turns out that easy picks are the way to go for her, as she won $100,000 in Saturday's drawing.

"It was a big surprise to me, I was thrilled to death," Whetstone said.

Whetstone, who is retired, said she bought her winning ticket at Fareway, 619 Burnett Ave. in Ames and checked her ticket Sunday morning by reading the winning numbers in a local newspaper.

Whetstone's winning ticket initially matched four of the first five number and the Powerball to win a $50,000 prize, but since she added the Power Play® option to her purchase, her prize doubled to $100,000. The winning numbers in Saturday's $70.5 million jackpot drawing were: 6-21-41-52-62 and Powerball 26. The Power Play number was 2. Wednesday's jackpot is $83 million.

Whetstone turns 80 years old Friday and she said she has a big birthday wish now that she's won the lottery.

"The lottery is buying me a new car!" she said.
