Northern Iowa Man Scratches Off $300,000 Lottery Prize

Allen Walker Claims Top Prize in 'Ruby Red Crossword' Scratch Game

Allen Walker

CLIVE, Iowa

CLIVE, Iowa — A northern Iowa man said he carefully checked his scratch ticket as he tried to figure out if he'd really won a $300,000 lottery prize.

Once he did that, Walker, a retired veteran, said he knew he'd reached the game's top prize level. He plans to invest most of his winnings and set some aside for home repairs and the eventual purchase of a new vehicle.

Walker, 64, won the fourth top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "Ruby Red Crossword" scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 1500 U.S. Highway 169 N. in Algona, the same store he bought a $100,000-winning scratch ticket at in November 2023.

In the game, players try to complete words in a puzzle with a given set of letters. The more words they complete, the larger the prize. Walker said he knew he had a lot of words on his lucky ticket, but wasn't initially sure how much he'd won until he charted them out by hand.

Ruby Red Crossword is a $30 scratch game that features 16 top prizes of $300,000, 47 prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.29. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
