CLIVE, Iowa — A central Iowa man bought a lottery ticket on his day off and won a $30,000 prize.
"Thursdays are my day off so I started the morning with a round of golf," Bryan Doornenbal told officials on Thursday as he claimed his prize at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive. "I was feeling good about myself and it's usually in those moments when I buy a ticket: I'm in a good mood, something good just happened, and we try to parlay that into more luck."
Doornenbal, 36, of Pleasant Hill, won the 14th prize of $30,000 in the "Premiere" scratch game. He bought his winning ticket at Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh, 4910 Maple Drive in Pleasant Hill. He scratched the ticket in the parking lot, then immediately rushed home to show his wife, Alexis.
"She scanned it and then we knew," he said. "It's kind of just a surreal moment. You get that extra set of eyeballs on it, hopefully with a loved one, and then you celebrate."
Doornenbal, a car salesman and father of four, said he and his wife plan to use the winnings to pay off a vehicle and buy a Power Wheel car and new baseball and softball bats for their children.
Premiere is a $30 scratch game that features 17 top prizes of $300,000, 84 prizes of $30,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.39. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
