$50,000 Lottery Win Catches Cedar Rapids Woman By Surprise

Kathryn Borden Claims Top Prize In 'MONOPOLY™ 20X' Scratch Game

Kathryn Borden

CLIVE, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman who won a $50,000 lottery prize said she initially expected her winnings to be much smaller.

"I was scratching how much I won, and I was thinking, 'Oh, I just won another $5,'" Kathryn Borden said on Monday as she claimed her prize at the Iowa Lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office. "Then I kept scratching and more zeros came!'"

Borden, 44, won the second top prize in the MONOPOLY 20X scratch game from the Iowa Lottery and licensed by Scientific Games, LLC. She bought her winning ticket at Casey's, 130 41st Ave. Drive SW in Cedar Rapids and scratched the lucky ticket when she got home.

"I just sat there for 15 seconds," Borden said. "I rubbed my eyes a couple times to make sure I was seeing what I saw, and then I told my kids, 'You guys, I think I just won $50,000!'"

Borden, a retail manager, said she and her husband plan to use the winnings to retire debt, buy a vehicle and bolster their savings.

Based on the classic board game, MONOPOLY 20X is a $5 scratch game. It offers prizes from $5 to $50,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.74.
