Iowa Man Keeps Promise With $100,000 Lottery Prize

Walter Wood Claims Top Prize in '$100,000 Mega Crossword' Game

Walter Wood

CLIVE, Iowa — A northeast Iowa man has fulfilled a long-running promise to his wife with his $100,000 lottery prize.

"I just always tell my wife, someday we'll be lucky," Walter Wood of Sumner said.

That "someday" arrived when he uncovered a top prize on a "$100,000 Mega Crossword" scratch ticket. Wood bought his winning ticket at Dollar Fresh Market, 1345 S. Frederick Ave. in Oelwein. He claimed his winnings Friday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Wood said he knew he won something when he saw how many words he uncovered as he scratched his ticket, but he underestimated the size of his prize.

"I knew I was a $40 winner for sure. So I checked on my phone and it came up $100,000," he said.

Wood, 72, works at a rock quarry and said he has no plans to retire. When he does decide to slow down, he said his big win will make retirement more comfortable.

The $100,000 Mega Crossword game is a $10 scratch game that features 46 top prizes of $100,000, 92 prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.29. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
