CLIVE, Iowa — An Iowa City woman said she and her roommate were left speechless after they scratched off a $10,000 Iowa Lottery prize.
"We kind of both didn't believe it at first," Selah Jaggers, 21, said Tuesday as she claimed the prize at the Iowa Lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office. "I was kind of silent for 30 seconds. She thought it was $100 or something, and then it said $10,000!"
Jaggers said she and her roommate and friend, Maddie Hurley, are splitting the prize. They purchased a handful of "Doughman Doubler" scratch tickets during a stop for gas at Maverik, 822 First Ave. in Coralville.
"We go inside and I go, 'You know, we haven't bought a scratch-off in a while,'" Jaggers recalled. "We got four of the $2 scratchers."
The women took turns scratching, and when Jaggers revealed the top prize, Hurley was just as surprised as her friend.
"I was just screaming," Hurley said with a laugh. "I finally got a hold of it and looked at it to make sure. And then I was like, 'We're splitting this, right?' She's like, 'Yes! We'll split it!'"
Both Jaggers and Hurley said they plan to put their share of winnings toward student loans and living expenses.
Doughman Doubler is a $2 scratch game that features 10 top prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.45.
