CLIVE, Iowa – A Des Moines man has claimed a $40,000 prize in the Iowa Lottery's newest lotto game.
Cory Dunlap, 31, matched the five white balls in the April 28 Lotto America™ drawing: 26-27-29-34-40. That meant a $20,000 prize, which was doubled because Dunlap opted for the $1 Lotto America All Star Bonus™ add-on, which can multiply the prize amount (except for the jackpot) by up to five times.
Dunlap, who works at MidAmerican Energy, couldn't believe his eyes as he checked his ticket at work the morning after the drawing.
"I let my coworker take my phone and read the numbers to me again just to make sure I wasn't just hallucinating," he said. "He read it and I go, 'Holy cow, I just won $40,000!' It was kind of a surreal moment."
Dunlap bought his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 4960 E. Broadway Ave. in Des Moines, and claimed his prize on May 3 at lottery headquarters in Clive.
He said he was still incredulous as he told his wife, Kimberlee, the news.
"I told her I needed to get it verified," he said. "I didn't know if I was being punked in some really awesome fashion."
The Dunlaps plan to use their winnings on home improvements, including new carpet, windows and sliding glass doors.
"This is going to be a real boost for us," Cory Dunlap said.
Lotto America, an enhanced version of the original lottery game, is a multi-state lottery game. More details about how to play this game can be found on the Iowa Lottery's website, www.ialottery.com.
