Poweshiek County Man's 4th of July Starts with Blast of Cash

Andrew Broadston Claims Top Prize in '$30,000 Crossword' Scratch Game

Andrew Broadston

CLIVE, Iowa — The Fourth of July started with a boom for a Poweshiek County man, but it had nothing to do with fireworks.

Andrew Broadston of Montezuma won a top prize in the "$30,000 Crossword" scratch game. He bought his winning ticket at Casey's, 312 West St. in Grinnell, where he stopped on his way to a holiday celebration with family.

In the $30,000 Crossword game, players complete words with a given set of letters. The more words they complete, the more money they win.

Broadston scratched the ticket when he got back to his vehicle and noticed he was completing more words than usual.

"Words just kept appearing for me, and I thought, 'Alright, maybe it's a $1,000 winner,'" he said.

But it wasn't until he took the ticket back into the store and scanned it at a self-checker that he realized the size of his prize.

"I checked it and it came up as $30,000, I was just in awe and shock of it," Broadston said.

Broadston, who claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Clive, said he plans to use the money to pay down the debt on his wife's vehicle and take his family on a vacation.

The $30,000 Crossword game is a $3 scratch game that features 151 top prizes of $30,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.52. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
