CLIVE, Iowa — A southern Iowa man who scratched off a $30,000 lottery prize said his big win came with an unexpected side effect.

"I didn't sleep much after that," Jay Moore said on Thursday as he claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Clive. "It took me a couple days for everything to sink in."

Moore, 46, of Bloomfield, won the 54th top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$30,000 Crossword" scratch game. He bought his winning ticket at BP, 206 N. Washington St. in Bloomfield and scratched the ticket when he got home. He thought he'd won $3,000 until he returned to the store and asked an employee to check it on the lottery terminal.

"This whole time I'm thinking, 'Man, $3,000 is going to buy a whole lot of gas for me,'" Moore recalled with a laugh. "She handed the ticket back to me and I looked, and out of all that excitement, I'd missed an 'n.' So instead of nine words, I had 10. She goes, 'Yeah, it's $30,000!'"

Moore said he plans to save his winnings.

"This money can just sit, and anytime something pops up out of the blue that we need, I'll have it," he said.

The $30,000 Crossword game is a $3 scratch game that features 151 top prizes of $30,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.52. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
