Des Moines Man Plans On Anniversary Gift, Stereo Upgrade After Lottery Win

Mike Ewald Claims Prize of More Than $17,000

CLIVE, Iowa - A Des Moines man had a pressing reason to make a detour on the way home from work: He needed to claim a lottery prize of more than $17,000.

Mike Ewald said he made his usual stop at a local convenience store after work on Thursday and bought a ticket in the "MONOPOLY™ Game Tokens Progressive" InstaPlay game while he was there. He scanned the ticket on the store's self-checker and realized he'd won a $17,140.80 prize.

"Then I immediately checked it with my mobile app and took a screenshot and sent it to my wife," he said as he claimed his prize Thursday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive. "She said, 'Oh my gosh, is that yours?' And I'm like, 'Yes, it is!'"

Ewald, 48, purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 2110 Guthrie Ave. in Des Moines.

Ewald said his lottery win has the nice timing of hitting just before he and his wife's eighth wedding anniversary.

"Good timing! So I think she's going to get a little spoiled this year," he said. "We might have to hit the jewelry store. We might have to add to her ring collection."

Ewald said he'll put some of the winnings in savings, and he's considering an upgrade to the stereo on the couple's motorcycle or even a new tattoo.

MONOPOLY™ Game Tokens Progressive is a $5 game that features a unique play style based on the classic board game. Its progressive jackpot starts at $5,000 and increases with every ticket sold statewide until it is won.

InstaPlay games, which range in price from $1 to $30, combine features from instant-scratch and lotto games to give players an option with no numbers to pick, playslips to fill out or wait for a drawing. InstaPlay tickets are known as "scratchless" because they have no security coating that needs to be removed to determine the prize won. The tickets are printed on demand from the lottery terminal.
