CLIVE, Iowa — A central Iowa man's last-second decision at the grocery store led to a $30,000 Iowa Lottery prize.
Joe Renzo, 75, of Norwalk, won a top prize in the "TRiPLE 333" scratch game. He claimed his winnings Monday at lottery headquarters in Clive.
Renzo said he was shopping for groceries at Hy-Vee, 4605 Fleur Dr. in Des Moines, and purchased $7 worth of lottery tickets on his way out of the store. Renzo almost left it at that, but decided he needed a nice even number.
"I almost walked out of there without spending the extra $3, and I said, 'I want to make it $10 even,' so that was it," Renzo said.
That $3 purchase made all the difference.
"Somehow that ticket came up for us, and it can happen, that's all I know," Renzo said.
Renzo is a retired attorney and said he plans to save most of his prize.
TRiPLE 333 is a $3 scratch game with top prizes of $30,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.54. For more information, visit www.ialottery.com.
