History Repeats Itself for Des Moines Man After $20,000 Lottery Win

Dave Brown Claims Big Prize In 'Word Search' InstaPlay Game

Dave Brown

CLIVE, Iowa — A Des Moines man said he felt luck on his side after his second $20,000 lottery win in two years.

"I can honestly say it's not a new experience for me because I was fortunate to hit the same game a couple years ago," Dave Brown said on Tuesday as he claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Clive. "I feel very fortunate to have hit it again."

Brown, 75, won the big prize in the Iowa Lottery's "Word Search" InstaPlay game. He purchased his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 2540 E. Euclid Ave. in Des Moines, the same retailer he purchased a $20,000-winning Word Search ticket at in May 2022.

Brown, a retired police officer, didn't check his ticket until he got home. He did a double-take when he saw that he'd won, and that familiar feeling of elation began to sink in.

"It still felt pretty darn good," he said. "I've had a string of luck here the past couple of years."

Brown said he plans to use his winnings to help a family member in need.

Word Search is a $20 game that features 25 top prizes of $100,000, 75 prizes of $20,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.05.

The InstaPlay product combines features from instant-scratch and lotto games. InstaPlay tickets are called "scratchless" because they have no security coating that needs to be removed to determine the prize won. And rather than having supplies of tickets printed in advance like those in traditional scratch and pull-tab games, InstaPlay tickets are printed on demand from the lottery terminal.

InstaPlay games range in price from $1 to $30. For more information, visit www.ialottery.com.
