CLIVE, Iowa — A northern Iowa man started the new year with a $20,000 lottery prize.
Adam Simons of Ackley won a top prize in the "$20,000 Crossword" scratch game. He claimed his prize Thursday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City.
Simons said he dropped his girlfriend off at work early on New Year's Day, then bought his ticket at Casey's, 904 Cardinal Ave. in Dows. He took the ticket home and uncovered his big prize.
"I just screamed at the top of my lungs," Simons said. "I only thought it was a $300 winner, then I scanned it on my phone and I couldn't believe it."
Simons, 32, said he plans to use his winnings to make a down payment on a new car for his girlfriend, pay several months' worth of rent, and buy a couple of guitars.
The $20,000 Crossword game is a $2 scratch game that features 34 top prizes of $20,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.46. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
