CLIVE, Iowa — An Appanoose County woman plans to use her $250,000 lottery prize to build a new home for herself and her husband for their retirement years.
"We've both worked hard all of our lives and this is not something that I expected," said Susan Ellison of Unionville.
She won a top prize playing the "Lucky 7 Bonus" scratch game, which she purchased at Casey's, 504 W. Mary St. in Ottumwa. Ellison claimed her prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Clive.
Ellison said she and her husband will build their new home on their rural, wooded property where they currently live.
"So now comes the decisions of what type of house plans to go with, and where to actually situate it. It'll be fun!" she said.
Ellison, 55, works in customer service at a manufacturing facility. While she still has a few more years of work, Ellison said she's thrilled she can take care of a big part of retirement sooner than planned.
"This is just a really nice way to start the year of 2025," she said. "Hopefully by the end of 2025, we'll actually be in our new home that will last us for the rest of our lifetimes."
Lucky 7 Bonus is a $20 scratch game that features 20 top prizes of $250,000, 76 prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.88. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
