Small-Town Casey's Produces Back-To-Back $30,000 Lottery Wins

Iowans Claim Big Prizes On Same Day

Tommy Otten and Diana Wells

CLIVE, Iowa — A Casey's store in eastern Iowa produced two big winners in a row, with a pair of $30,000 lottery prizes claimed on the same day.

Tommy Otten of Oxford Junction won a top prize in the "$30,000 Crossword" scratch game, and Diana Wells of Marion won a top prize in the "Blackjack" scratch game. They both purchased their tickets at Casey's, 204 E. Main St. in Wyoming, a town of about 500 people in Jones County. Otten and Wells claimed their prizes Monday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Otten said he stopped at Casey's to pick up a pizza. He brought it home, along with his scratch ticket, and uncovered his prize.

"At first I thought it was only nine words, which is $3,000. And the next morning I went into the local gas station, had them scan it, and show me. No, it was $30,000," Otten said.

Otten, who is 63 and retired, plans to use the money on restoring his 1881 Victorian home, which has been in his family since 1977.

"I'm trying to get it back into the shape it was when it was brand new," Otten said.

Winning tickets are distributed randomly, making these back-to-back wins purely coincidental. The Casey's where Otten and Wells purchased their tickets produced another big winner in March 2020, when Nathan Galvin of Cedar Rapids won a $100,000 prize on a scratch ticket.
