CLIVE, Iowa — A Black Hawk County man has won a $10,000 Mega Millions® prize.
Dan Gates of Hudson matched four white balls and the Mega Ball to win a $10,000 prize in the Jan. 22 drawing. He was one number away from winning that night’s $82 million jackpot.
"When you match one ball, it’s neat," said Gates, who bought his ticket at Casey’s, 354 E. Eldora Road in Hudson. "As I kept going it just kept getting better and better.
"Once I saw that the Mega Ball was the same, that’s when it really got exciting."
He checked his numbers on his phone and was surprised when he realized he’d won. He said he was sitting next to his girlfriend, Connie, and elbowed her in surprise, causing her to ruin the paperwork she was completing.
"She said she needs a big Valentine’s gift now," Gates said with a laugh.
Gates claimed his prize Friday at the lottery’s Cedar Rapids regional office.
The winning numbers in the Jan. 22 drawing were 4-15-37-59-64 and Mega Ball 16. The Megaplier® was 5.
