CLIVE, Iowa — A California woman on a trip to visit her family in Iowa has won a $50,000 prize in a new lottery game.
Donna Montgomery of Visalia, Calif., won the first top prize in the Iowa Lottery's new "Silverado" scratch game, which began sales on May 6.
"It's unbelievable," Montgomery, 67, told officials on Monday as she claimed her prize at lottery headquarters in Clive. "It's very exciting."
Montgomery and her daughter, Christine DeMoss, were driving to Des Moines to buy supplies for her grandson's graduation party when they stopped at Casey's, 1807 Iowa Highway 5 S. in Lovilia.
Montgomery bought her ticket there and scratched it in the car as they got back on the road.
"You scratch off the amount and it says $50,000, and I'm like, 'No. No. Yeah? No!'" Montgomery recalled with a laugh. "I'm freaking out over there and my daughter said, 'Do I need to pull over?' I said, 'Yeah, I think you do.'"
They returned to Casey's to verify the big win, then drove straight to lottery headquarters in Clive to claim the prize. Montgomery said she plans to use her winnings to pay bills.
Silverado is a $5 scratch game that features eight top prizes of $50,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.74. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
