CLIVE, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman said a bit of wishful thinking preceded her $20,000 lottery win.
"When I started scratching, I'm like, 'You know, it'd be really great to win $20,000 today. I think I'm going to do it today!'" Jennifer Schaub said with a laugh on Monday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office.
Schaub, 53, won the 16th top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$20,000 Crossword" scratch game. She purchased her winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 20 Wilson Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids. She thought she'd completed eight words on her ticket to win $300, until she scanned it with the Iowa Lottery mobile app and realized her prize was much larger.
"I scanned my ticket on the app and it said $20,000. I was like, 'Whoa!'" she said. "I had to look at it like four times: 'It says $20,000. It really does say $20,000!'"
Schaub said she and her husband, Steve, are thinking about putting the winnings toward home improvements, including an expansion of their patio.
The $20,000 Crossword game is a $2 scratch game that features 34 top prizes of $20,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.46. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit ialottery.com.
