Scratch-Ticket Ritual Pays Off For Southeast Iowa Woman

Christina Winn Claims Top Prize In 'Winner Winner Chicken Dinner' Game

CLIVE, Iowa — A southeast Iowa woman's tradition led to a $10,000 lottery prize.

"I scratched it and I was like, 'There's no way!'" said Christina Winn of Fort Madison.

Winn is a nursing student and has a good-luck ritual of buying a lottery ticket before a test. She had a final exam on Thursday, so she went to Casey's, 1208 Ave. H in Fort Madison, and bought a "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner" scratch ticket.

"When I went to go scratch it before my final, I looked down and thought it was a joke," Winn recalled.

She ran back to Casey's to have a clerk there verify her win.

"She's like, 'I think you won $10,000!'" Winn said.

Winn claimed her prize Friday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Besides nursing school, Winn, 41, also juggles motherhood and overnight shifts at a nursing home. She said her big lottery win has brought some much-needed relief.

"I just get to breathe a little bit easier this month and possibly the next couple of months," Winn said.

She plans to use her winnings for Christmas shopping and will save the rest.

Winn is the first person to win a $10,000 top prize in Winner Winner Chicken Dinner, which is a $2 scratch game with overall odds of 1 in 3.69. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
